Single-mode fiber (SMF) links are gradually being deployed in datacenter networks because of their high bandwidth and density. Further increase of the data transmission rate in optical fiber links are anticipated, and thus, mode division multiplexing (MDM) is currently drawing attention. Polymer waveguide-based multiplexers (MUX) for MDM with step-index (SI) cores have been reported previously, but the device still needs to be more compact for practical usage. We have proposed a waveguide fabrication method called the Mosquito method which is capable of fabricating graded index (GI) circular cores. In this paper, at first, the most suitable refractive index profile in the waveguide cores is investigated for fabricating a subminiature MUX. Next narrow pitch waveguide couplers with different core diameters are fabricated using the Mosquito method. |
