The optical power resolution (OPR) is one of the most important parameters of photodetectors in optical communication/measurement systems. We have proposed a novel optical power measurement scheme called “amplified-spontaneous-emission feedback circuit (ASEFC) scheme” with significantly improved OPRs compared with the conventional scheme. We also successfully measured the loss of a variable optical attenuator with a significantly large improvement factor of about 70 using the ASEFC scheme compared with the conventional scheme. The achieved resolution using the ASEFC scheme was about 0.00014 dB when the resolution of the power meter used with the ASEFC was set at 0.01 dB. |
