Modeling of couplings between two degenerate linearly-polarized modes based on dual three-dimensional Stokes Space

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) In mode-division-multiplexed transmission in multi-mode fibers (MMFs), it is essential to compensate for couplings between modes using multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO) signal processing in optical receivers. To design the MIMO implementation, it is helpful to model for mode couplings in MMFs. By analogy of the polarization rotation in optical fibers, two degenerate modes with dual polarization are expressed by 41 Jones vectors, and their couplings can be described by a 44 Jones matrix. By modeling the 44 Jones matrix by a random unitary matrix, the mode group delay in MMFs has been investigated. From the viewpoint of physics, it is doubtful that the Jones matrix can be modeled by completely random unitary matrix, because the couplings between two degenerate modes can be composed of independent polarization rotation and mode couplings in MMFs. In this study, we propose the modeling of the couplings between two degenerate modes using the Stokes space, which is usually used for polarization rotation. Assuming that polarization rotation and mode coupling are independent, we show that couplings between two degenerate modes can be visualized on dual three-dimensional Stokes spaces.
