DCT Compression considering Spatial Correlation for WSNs

(in English) In wireless sensor networks (WSNs), it is necessary to reduce power consumption of sensor nodes (SNs) for realizing a long-life network. The data compression techniques can effectively reduce power consumption at an SN. For limitations of power and processing resources, a simple and high performance compression method should be chosen. In this paper, we propose a discrete cosine transform (DCT) compression technique considering spatial correlation. The proposed method sorts a series of SNs to minimize the spatial Euclidean distance between SNs. The computer simulation using actual measured temperature in a room evaluates the data reconstruction accuracy of the conventional DCT and the proposed method. The simulation results show that the proposed method can improve the data reconstruction accuracy. When the allowable error is set at 0.5 [degree Celsius], compared with the conventional DCT, the data that achieves allowable error improve more than 10 [%].
