Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) his paper discusses differential orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) employing joint detection (JD) for underwater acoustic communications (UWACs) in the presence of severe double selectivity, where JD can estimate channel and data simultaneously. JD is effective for severe doubly-selective environment, because JD can detect data without pilot-symbols for its channel estimation. However, even differential OFDM needs frequent synchronization word (SW) insertion, in order to track fast time-varying SW timing. If differential OFDM performs differential encoding only for time direction and data detection by means of JD, there is no constraint for its phase differences between subcarriers. Thus, this differential OFDM can employ a subcarrier phase offset (SPO) scheme, whose subcarrier reference phase is equal to Zadoff-Chu (ZC) sequence of SW. SPO differential OFDM can improve transmission information efficiency, because JD can operate continuously through multiple frames. Finally, computer simulation confirms performance of SPO differential OFDM in UWAC environment.
