Observed results of arc discharges generated between the brush and commutator are reported during arc duration. The arcs were observed by a high-speed camera. The brush and commutator were installed to an experimental device that simulates rotational motion of a real DC motor. The aim of this report is to investigate the occurring position, dimensions, and moving characteristics of the arc discharges by means of direct observation of them. Time evolutions of the arc voltage and current are measured, simultaneously. The arc discharges are generated when an inductive circuit is interrupted. Circuit current before interruption was 4A. The metal graphite or graphite brush and a copper commutator are used. The results show that the position, dimensions and motion of arc discharges are successfully obtained and the dimensions depend on the copper content on the cathode surface. |
