Visual programming (VP) environments are used for learning programming for novices.
Learners can create a program by choosing available blocks, which are provided in VP environments.
Programs composed of available blocks do not include syntactic errors; therefore, learners do not need to fix errors of their program and can concentrate on learning fundamental concepts of programming.
Learners majoring in computer science proceed to learn text-based programming languages like C language after learning the fundamental concepts with VP environments.
The learners have to learn keywords and syntax to create programs in text-based programming languages.
Since learners do not take care of keywords and syntax in VP environments; we think that learning many keywords and syntax at once would be a barrier for learners who proceed to text-based languages.
In this study, we added a feature to AT, one of the VP environments for novices, to support the gradual transition from VP to C language.
This feature consists of a block for describing C program and an API server for converting C language into JavaScript.
This paper reports an overview of this feature and describes the problems found in the development of this feature and their solutions. |
