Why don't the phantoms appear at noon? -- The time of day and conditions which pareidolia is most likely to occur --

(in English) The hypothesis of the present study was that face pareidolia is promoted at the times where supernatural agents (e.g., ghosts and phantoms) are expected to appear in the ethnographic references. In this study, the Pareidolia task was performed at midnight, twilight time, and noon. The results of Experiment 1 showed that pareidolia occurred more frequently at midnight and twilight than at noon. The results in Experiment 2 showed no difference in pareidolia occurred among time conditions. However, the group that imagined supernatural information during Experiment 2 showed the similar tendency to Experiment 1. These results suggest that the perception of supernatural agents may be more likely to occur when people imagine supernatural information at midnight or twilight.
