Electroencephalogram (EEG) reflects brain states and is classified by kinds of frequency. Among them, ripple or high frequency oscillations (HFO) in the 100 Hz~500 Hz range can be recorded from healthy brain and also from pathological brain, for example from hippocampus. HFO can be a biomarker of epileptogenesis. In this study, we revealed that there were three kinds of epileptic discharges interictal (IID), preictal (PID) and ictal discharges (ID) with the application of proepileptic agents to rat hippocampal slices. The three patterns had different HFO frequencies and durations. Furthermore, in CA3 mini slice, IID and PID were induced, and ID could not be observed. These results suggest that IID and PID may be induced in the local network in CA3, and ID is induced in the global network in CA3, CA1, and DG. |
