Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) can activate different brain functions in a noninvasive manner. Advances in the computation of the TMS-induced electric field permitted the estimation of the activation site at the macroscopic level with high precision despite the complicated nature of the brain anatomy. At the same time, these computational techniques allow the investigation of induced electric field effects on neural stimulation at the microscopic level. The aim of the present study is to make use of multiscale analysis to investigate the neural stimulation to elucidate the mechanism of stimulation. We found that by combining subject-specific multiscale modelling with TMS measurements, estimation of stimulation site emerges from the computation of neural activation. |
