Attentional modulation of spike synchrony in a disinihibition network model

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Recent computational study has reported that top-down attention mediated by feedback signals modulates the neuronal activities in visual areas via activating inhibitory neurons. In this study, we propose network model consisting excitatory Border Ownership (BO) neuron and two classes of inhibitory neurons (SOM and VIP neurons). Attention was mediated by the projection of VIP to SOM neurons, whereas visual inputs projected to both Pyr and SOM neurons. Simulations of the model were in good agreement with attentional modulation of physiological V2 neurons, which indicated that attention decreased spike synchrony between pairs of BO model neurons, independent of the increase in their firing rates due to attention. These results suggested that the behavior of two types of inhibitory neurons underlie the attentional modulation in visual cortices.
