To cope with the growing air traffic demand while ensuring safety, Reduced Vertical Separation Minimum (RVSM) was introduced in Japan in 2000. Height-keeping performance is monitored by Height Monitoring Unit (HMU) using the multilateration method. On the other hand, Automatic Dependent Surveillance - Broadcast (ADS-B) Height Monitoring System (AHMS) has been proposed and used in Australia and other regions. Although geometric height of aircraft is necessary for height-keeping performance monitoring, ADS-B can broadcast two types of geometric height, Height Above Ellipsoid (HAE) and Height Above Geoid (HAG). In Japan, the difference between HAE and HAG is up to 150 ft. It causes non-negligible errors in height-keeping performance monitoring. This paper reports the probability density distributions associated with ADS-B Geometric Height Datums from the frequency distributions of the track average difference between the geometric height obtained by the ADS-B receiver and the geometric height measured by the Sendai HMU. |
