Passable width perception during bike riding in virtual environments

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) When confronted with a narrow aperture during locomotion, one needs to judge whether the aperture is passable and to take appropriate actions to avoid making any contact with the aperture if it’s not passable. Previous studies have shown that one starts to rotate one’s shoulder during walking when the aperture width is below a certain level relative to their shoulder width. However, little is known what kind of self-motion information affects the perception of passable width. Here we investigate the effect of visual and active self-motion information on passable width perception during bike riding in a virtual reality environment. Participants wore a head-mounted display and pedaled a bike. Various aperture widths were presented 3 m ahead of them. Their task was to judge whether the aperture width is passable. Independent variables were the existence of pedaling (with/without) and optic flow (with/without). Results showed that the passable width boundary during pedaling was larger than that without pedaling. The boundary was also larger when the optic flow was presented than when it was not. No interaction was observed. These results suggest that motor command and proprioceptive information included in active self-motion and visual information both contribute to the perception of passable width boundary.
