It is required to convert a multigradation image into a few gradation image in order to express it in electronic papers or ink jet printers. Error diffusion is one of methods of multi-level halftoning and expresses a multigradation image with several levels. The binary image obtained by 2-level error diffusion, which excelled in gradation reproducibility, has favorable dot distribution and can express the original image naturally. However, in the case of 3-level error diffusion, dot distribution decreases in the region consisting of pixels which has the brightness near a certain intermediate quantization level and this causes the appearance of the banding artifact. On the other hand, 3-level error diffusion based on non-linear conversion can prevent from appearance of this banding artifact. Although, by increasing the dot distribution excessively, white and black pixels that do not match the brightness of the region occur. In this report, we propose the 3-level halftoning method that can prevent from appearance of the banding artifact and the occurrence of white and black pixels that do not match the brightness of the region. |
