Case report of university textbooks published by MyISBN, a print-on-demand service

(in English) When university faculty members want to publish textbooks that they use in their classes, they often publish at their own expense. It requires an initial investment of hundreds of thousands to millions of yen, and faces inventory risk and disposal risk due to obsolescence of contents. We will introduce an example published by MyISBN, a self-funded publishing print-on-demand service that can overcome this problem. Next, we will consider the issues related to print-on-demand publishing that were raised in previous research. The second author published a textbook to be used in university classes using MyISBN. We published books with an initial investment of several thousand yen, hedged the risk of inventory and disposal, and published more than 1,000 books from 2013 to 2020. As far as textbooks are concerned, the publication of books using MyISBN is thought to lead to the solution of many of the problems shown in previous studies.
