Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, people are becoming more and more dependent on smartphones.
As such dependence on smartphones increases, adverse effects of excessive smartphones usage are becoming evident in the form of “smartphone addiction.”
We conducted a questionnaire survey in which 32,577 adults completed measures of a smartphone addiction scale to study smartphone usage patterns in the pandemic and its influence on the smartphone addiction.
We observed two trends: 1) using smartphones for long hours does not necessarily cause the addiction regardless of pandemic, and 2)pandemic decreases smartphone addiction.
We also collected behavior logs from a part of the participants of the questionnaire survey and observed significant differences between those with and without the smartphone addiction in the following measures: a) smartphone usage behaviors such as frequency of taps on a smartphone, b) actual behaviors such as moving or staying and c) both smartphone usage and actual behaviors such as frequency of taps on a smartphone in motion.
These behaviors, a), b),and c), might be predictors for the smartphone addiction.
