Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) HAPS (High-Altitude Platform Station) is a radio station installed on an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV), such as a balloon, airship, or other aircraft , that flies in the stratosphere at the altitude of approximately 20 km where low wind speeds are expected to yield stable flight. HAPS has the potential for implementing mobile communications by using the same systems as terrestrial networks such as Fourth Generation Long Term Evolution (4G LTE) or Fifth Generation New Radio (5GNR). Moreover, its 20 km altitude is lower than that of communications satellites, meaning that HAPS can provide mobile communications services directly to smartphones without needing special equipment such as a satellite communications terminal. Currently, the ITU-R (International Telecommunication Union Radio Sector) has established the Corresponding Group (CG) 3J-3K-3M-14 to study the propagation model for HAPS. In this paper, we report on the status of the international standardization of HAPS propagation models. .
