Time-Frequency Domain Correlation Power Analysis for Side-Channel Attack Resistance Evaluation of Practical Modules

(in English) When evaluating the Side-Channel Attack resistance of a practical module, the correlation coefficient, a measure of side-channel information leakage strength, may decrease. It means that the time domain correlation power analysis (CPA) may occur false negative due to jitter and due to noise from other ICs than that of the leakage source. Under such unfavorable conditions, CPA in the time-frequency domain can be effective. We investigated the time-frequency domain CPA’s performance for the AES cryptographic circuit that was, in this work, implemented on Arduino Uno, with no SCA countermeasure. Results indicated a higher correlation coefficient than those by the time domain CPA under unfavorable conditions. Therefore, the time-frequency domain CPA is more suitable for evaluating the practical modules where jitter and low SNR are expected.
