A rat race coupler is useful as a 180-degree coupler. But in principle, a phase difference of 180 degrees can be obtained only at the center frequency, and the transmission and coupling characteristics are different frequency characteristics. Therefore, it has a problem that the coupling amplitude difference and the coupling phase difference depend on the frequency and have each narrow band.
Here, we propose a rat race coupler that represents the low coupling amplitude difference and the low coupling phase difference. The proposed configuration consists of phase inversion circuit comprised of twists loaded on each line. In this circuit, unlike the conventional one, it is possible to realize a phase difference of 180 degrees without using the λ / 2 line length difference, and the phase slope with respect to the frequency of each line is the same. As a result, the transmission and coupling characteristics of the coupler become the same frequency characteristics, and the frequency characteristics of the phase difference also become frequency-independent. Therefore, the coupling amplitude difference and the coupling phase difference are reduced.
The measurement results demonstrated a return loss of 20dB, an isolation of 30dB, a coupling response of -3.1dB+0.15/-0.15dB, phase differences of 0deg+1/-1deg and -180deg+1/-1deg with a bandwidth of 8% in the K-band. |
