Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Previous studies claim that visual art, which is highly evaluated, uses a compositional trick which guides the viewer's gaze to round widely over the work. As a first step toward confirming the truth of this hypothetical claim, we examined relationship between impressions of ukiyo-e and gaze pattern suggested by the above claim. In particular, we measured viewers' gaze while looking at ukiyo-e and evaluated their impressions towards ukiyo-e. In order to examine the relationship independent of painters and painting styles, we selected Katsushika Hokusai's ''Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji'', which is known for its "cartoon-like and illustrative style" and Utagawa Hiroshige's "the Fifty-three Stages on the Tokaido", which is known for its "realistic style", as experimental stimuli. The results showed that there was a significant difference between gaze-movement area of highly rated paintings and that of poorly rated paintings.
