Electromagnetic field analysis of common mode excitation measurement system in signal connector with incomplete ground connection

(in English) Electromagnetic interference (EMI) due to common mode current generated from high-speed digital circuits on printed circuit boards (PCB) and connectors to attach a cable is one EMI issue in board design, and it is necessary to evaluate the superiority or inferiority of connectors.
In order to evaluate the superiority or inferiority of a connector, the strength of radiated electric field is generally measured in an anechoic chamber, however it is costly and time consuming.
In this report, therefore, the authors propose a simple measuring jig that can evaluate the common mode radiation of the connector without using an anechoic chamber.
Using the electromagnetic field simulation, a measuring jig was modelized and the common mode radiation generated from the connector connecting the PCB and the coaxial cable was simulated. When the common mode radiation obtained from the measurement system and the amount of radiated electric field directly obtained from the circuit board were compared, they matched with an maximum error of 1 dB. Therefor it was found that the compatibility between the connector and the cable can be evaluated using the proposed measurement system.
