Calibration of Nonoverlapping View Positions with a Laser Pointer and Plane Mirrors

(in English) We propose a method to calculate the relative positions of two fixed cameras whose fields of view do not overlap by using a laser pointer and one fixed plane mirror. First, both the laser pointer’s direction and the positions of the mirror in the coordinate system of the calibration board are simultaneously estimated by observing with the one camera where the light rays reflected by the mirror are projected and received on the same calibration board itself. Next, the laser ray is reflected by the same fixed mirror and received on the other calibration board, and the receiving point is observed by another camera. As a result, the fields of view of the two cameras can be related, and the relative positions between those cameras can be calculated. The proposed method is particularly suitable for calculating the relative positions of cameras facing the front and rear of a vehicle body in opposite directions and cameras facing distant positions such as for surveillance.
