Automated detection of malignant tumors on PET/CT images using convolutional neural networks and statistical images

(in English) In this study, we performed automatic detection of tumors from PET / CT images using Z-score images. The Z-score image is created by comparing the pixel values of the normal model and the target image. Therefore, we created a Z-score image by performing TPS deformation on a normal model based on a case with an abnormality. Since the candidate regions of tumors contain many false positives, we used a convolutional neural network (CNN) to classify and delete false positives and true positives. We used 336 tumors in the trunk of 63 abnormal cases as detection targets. We used TLG (Total legion glycolysis), which is an index that considers the volume of tumor and the degree of glucose metabolism, and the center of gravity of the tumor region in order to evaluate the number of detected tumors. As a result of conducting experiments by inputting PET images and Z-score images into the CNN, 80.1% of the tumors were successfully extracted by this method, and the number of false positives (FPs) per case was 12.5.
