[Invited Lecture] Vegetation loss model considering seasonal characteristics in HAPS communication

(in English) HAPS, the High-Altitude Platform Station that provides communications services from altitudes of around 20 km via an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) such as a balloon, airship, or other aircraft, is attracting much attention as a new mobile communications platform for ultra-wide coverage areas and disaster-resilient networks. HAPS can provide mobile communications service directly to smartphones, the terminal of choice in terrestrial mobile communications networks running Fourth Generation Long Term Evolution (4G LTE), and in the near future, Fifth Generation New Radio (5G NR). In order to design efficient cell configurations for HAPS-based services, we need a radio wave propagation model that takes into consideration factors such as terrain, vegetation, urban areas, suburban areas, and building entry loss. In this paper, we focus on the propagation loss due to vegetation. We perform vegetation loss measurements in summer and winter, and propose a vegetation loss model that can consider different amounts of vegetation leaves in different seasons.
