Experimental Study on 3-Dimensional Imaging Using MW-2D-MIMO Radar

(in English) Recently, the use of millimeter-wave radar is expected to enhance security measures. Most of the existing security systems use SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar) processing to achieve highly accurate 2D or 3D imaging. However, there is a problem that data acquisition by SAR observation requires a long time. Therefore, we investigated the possibility of realizing 3D imaging with a small number of elements in a short time by arranging the transmitter and receiver elements in 2D and applying MIMO (Multiple Input, Multiple Output) virtual array processing. In this paper, we evaluate the spatial resolution of a millimeter-wave (MW) MIMO radar using a two-dimensional planar array as the transmit and receive array, and show that 3D imaging of the target is possible.
