[Invited Talk] Generation and their application of optical pulses using optical fibers

(in English) Optical fibers are flexible waveguides with restricted transverse modes, which provide a stable and high beam quality. On the other hand, the cross-sectional area of the core is small, which makes it unsuitable for high power applications. In order to solve this problem, we are studying coherent addition, in which the optical outputs from multiple cores are added as a single optical wave by aligning the phase and polarization. Because of its low loss and long length, the nonlinear optical effect can be easily obtained, and it can be applied to the generation of short pulses. In this paper, we report on the generation of noise-like pulses using the high nonlinearity, and on the successful application of this technique to the generation of highly stable broadband (supercontinuum) light.
