[Special Talk] Hospital information system (HIS) and clinical and research supporting system

(in English) At present, more than 90% of large hospitals with more than 400 beds have implemented a hospital information system (HIS) with an electronic medical record system (EMRs) at its core, and it has been positioned as a lifeline for hospital care. The digitization of medical information promotes its primary and secondary use, and it has been utilized in various fields such as medical treatment, research, and education. As part of the complete computerization of medical records in 2009, we made all information available on the HIS terminals. We also aimed to provide incentives for information input by reducing the input loads of clinicians by reusing stored data and increasing the usability of data with the structured information inputting system. In addition, to support clinical decision-making using the accumulated clinical data, we have developed and introduced disease management sheets and alert/reminder functions to improve medical safety and quality. Besides, university hospitals are owing to support the reuse of medical information, especially for research activities, and a field of them is to support case registrations. The reuse of medical information accumulated in the HIS is an essential issue for busy clinicians who must register various cases, and we are constructing a support system for this purpose. Although these functions and systems related to the clinical support have been built with the development of EMRs, they are still in the developmental stage, and it is necessary to build an infrastructure that enables the use of AI technology, as well as to standardize exchange standards and terminology for further information utilization. In this presentation, an introduction and discussions of these functions and related issues will be provided as an example of the efforts of a university hospital's hospital information system.
