Fundamental Examination of Beam Reflection Circuit Using Butler Matrix

(in English) In backscatter system such as Radio Frequency Identification (RFID), increasing the gain of the tag antennas is an important task for extending the communication range. Since the arrival direction of a radio wave to the tag are irregular, the antenna for backscatter system that can reflect to the arrival direction is required for increasing the gain. In this paper, we propose a beam reflector composed of a one-dimensional array antenna and a Butler matrix for this purpose. First, we show the principle of the circuit, then we evaluate with a circuit simulator that signals given to input ports of the array antenna with an arbitrary phase difference can reflect with the opposite phase difference by using the proposed circuit. It means that the radio wave can reradiate to the arrival direction from the one-dimensional array antenna. Furthermore, we examine applying the circuit to a two-dimensional array antenna. This beam reflection circuit can use as a radio equipment for backscatter by switching terminals of the Butler matrix simultaneously. In addition, by integrating the circuit and antennas into a multilayer dielectric substrate, it can become a compact and thin module. Thus, this configuration is a optimal for increasing the gain of RFID tags.
