Effect of the number and size of raindrops on perception of rain intensity in dynamic images

(in English) Although visual strength of the rain can be easily estimated, but the processing mechanism has been unknown. To clarify such a mechanism, we generated video stimuli by modulating the number of the raindrops in rainy scenes and conducted experiments where participants visually evaluated perceptual strength of the rain, the average size of the raindrops and the brightness of the scene. As a result, the perceptual strength of the rain decreased with decreasing the number of the raindrops randomly. However, when only small raindrops were reduced from the video, the perceptual strength of the rain slightly increased. These results suggest that not only the number of the raindrops but also the average size of the raindrops is a critical cue for estimating the strength of the rain.
