Optical fiber sensors have been extensively studied as key tools for structural health monitoring because of their ease of handling and capability of distribution measurement. Among various methods that have been developed so far, we have been focusing on the performance improvement of Brillouin optical correlation-domain reflectometry (BOCDR), which is a single-end-access distributed strain and/or temperature sensing technique based on Brillouin scattering in optical fibers. In 2016, we succeeded in developing high-speed BOCDR configurations called phase-detected BOCDR and slope-assisted BOCDR, the sampling rate of which reached up to 100 kHz (world record). However, at the cost of the high-speed operation, these systems suffered from their deteriorated strain dynamic range of less than 0.2%. To overcome this issue, in this work, we implement a high-speed BOCDR with no limitation of strain dynamic range and demonstrate its basic operation. Subsequently, we show its improved signal-to-noise ratio by suppressing the noise peculiar to this experimental system. |
