In this paper, we introduce some of our recent studies on highly-efficient low-latency random access that realize multi-packet reception based on non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA). An advanced random access protocol needs to be investigated to accommodate uplink transmission for massive machine-type communications (mMTC) and ultra-reliable low latency communications (URLLC) in the fifth-generation mobile communication system (5G NR) and beyond. Here, we consider the two-step random access, where the preamble and data are simultaneously transmitted unlike the 4G LTE/LTE-Advanced, to reduce the control signaling overhead and transmission latency compared to that for scheduling-based access. The technologies proposed by the authors introduced in this paper include (i) the effect of the bandwidth extension in NOMA-based random access with multi-packet reception, (ii) the physical channel identifier (PCID)-linked receiver beamforming (BF) method in the massive multi-antenna system to reduce the computational complexity and improve the active user detection and channel estimation accuracy at the base station receiver, (iii) the computationally-efficient preamble configuration for active user detection and channel estimation, (iv) the transmitter filtering (TF) method that realizes channel shortening, and (v) the efficient hybrid automatic repeat request (HARQ) method based on novel hierarchical tree-structured PCID groups that simultaneously achieves packet combining and resolution of the collisions of PCIDs during retransmission. Computer simulation shows the effectiveness of the advanced random access composed of the proposed technologies. |
