[Encouragement Talk] User Mobility-aware Intelligent Reflecting Surface Association Strategy for Multi-beam Transmission

(in English) In recent years, there has been increasing research interest in utilizing Intelligent Reflecting Surfaces (IRSs) for large-capacity and highly reliable wireless communication. Nevertheless, a multi-user access scheme with multiple IRSs poses limitations regarding the reduction of huge channel estimation overhead for numerous IRS-user links. The only way to reduce the exhaustive channel estimation involves associating the IRS with the user and performing the beam tracking for a period of time. But as the association between IRS and user is fixed during the tracking period, dynamic variations in their link state caused by user mobility degrade the system performance if IRS-user association is decided without prior scheduling. In order to tackle such challenges, in this study, we propose an IRS-user association strategy that considers user mobility for IRS-aided multi-beam transmission systems. The proposed strategy minimized the performance degradation even under drastic fluctuations of link conditions, which contributed to reducing the channel estimation overhead because both IRS and user can be associated with long time periods with low performance degradation.
