Evaluation of Impulse Response Estimation Algorithm for Indoor Wi-Fi Localization

(in English) In recent years, there has been much research work on indoor localization using Wi-Fi. In this study, we focus on a Wi-Fi localization algorithm to estimate the location of a station (STA) using a single access point (AP) with multiple antennas, and discuss the impulse response estimation algorithm which is a key component of Chronos. This algorithm estimates the impulse response with high time resolution from the frequency responses of tens of available Wi-Fi channels. The rising edge of the impulse response is the direct wave component from the STA, which represents the radio propagation delay from the STA, i.e., the distance from the STA. The equations to estimate the high-resolution impulse response is underdetermined, but the impulse response is sparse because it consists of a small number of propagation paths. Therefore, the impulse response is estimated using an optimization algorithm that add an L1 regularization term to the mean square error (MSE). In this study, we implement the impose estimation algorithm and verify the appropriate L1 regularization weight based on the root MSE (RMSE). We also verify the estimation accuracy of the impulse response according to the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). Furthermore, we estimate the radio propagation delay by detecting the rising edge of the estimated channel impulse response.
