It is known that the penalty due to chromatic-dispersion-induced power fading in radio-over-fiber links can be mitigated by self-phase modulation (SPM) in optical fiber transmission with anomalous dispersion. However, it is also known that parametric amplification, called modulation instability, occurs in such fiber transmission. In this paper, we attempt to physically interpret the phenomenon of dispersion-induced fading mitigated by SPM based on a comparison between experimental results and theoretical calculations. The region where parametric amplification occurs is limited by fiber loss, and SPM in this region contributes to the phase matching between the light waves involved in the parametric amplification. In this case, dispersion-induced fading is completely compensated for. On the other hand, in the region where the transmission power is below the threshold of parametric amplification, SPM compensates for the phase rotation caused by chromatic dispersion, but the amount of compensation decreases with the attenuation of transmission power. The validity of the above interpretation is verified through an experiment in which chromatic dispersion is added after transmission. |
