[Invited Talk] R&D of HAPS Mobile Communication Systems

(in English) The High Altitude Platform Station (HAPS), which covers an ultra-wide area from the stratosphere at an altitude of about 20 km, has recently drawn attention. HAPS can provide communication services with a low delay less than 1 ms in an area with a maximum radius of 100 km and is promising as a new communication platform for drones and flying cars that are expected to spread in the near future. Therefore, HAPS is expected as one of Beyond 5G promoting strategy in Japan. In addition, HAPS can also provide communication services directly to the smartphone from a relay station mounted on a solar plane. Because HAPS itself is not affected by a large-scale disaster and users can communicate immediately with their usual smartphones without carrying a special terminal, HAPS can be positioned as an ultimate platform for disaster countermeasure. In this talk, we will provide an overview of the HAPS and its mobile communication system, and also explain our research and development.
