[Encouragement Talk] Overhead Reduction for High-Quality Graph-Based Point Cloud Delivery

(in English) The point cloud expresses three-dimensional (3D) information by using many points on 3D space. It is important to be able to express 3D information more accurately in a limited band when the sender transmit a point cloud through a wireless channel. The method using graph signal processing can effectively compress multiple points scattered on 3D space, however, it requires communication overhead for its conversion. In this paper, we propose a new point cloud transmission scheme to reduce communication overhead while maintaining 3D content quality. More concretely, the amount of data required for transmission of the basis matrix is reduced by combining Givens rotation and non-uniform quantization, and the obtained angle parameters are transmitted to the receivers in order. Performance evaluation results using a point cloud reveal that the proposed scheme smoothly improves the quality for wireless channel and reduces the communication overhead by up to 40% compared to the conventional scheme using uniform quantization.
