Acoustic Characterization of Blood Mimicking Fluid for Ultrafast Ultrasound Imaging and PIV

(in English) Ultrafast ultrasound imaging has been applied to characterization of a blood flow vector velocity distribution in the vascular and cardiovascular systems. Estimation of blood flow velocities still causes errors due to artifacts in the limitations in ultrasonic imaging such as aliasing and presence of grating lobes. One of the other velocimeters is the optical particle image velocimeter (PIV). This study initially developed in vitro measurement system for analyzing flow velocities in blood mimicking fluid (BMF) with ultrasonic and optical PIVs. Acoustic properties such as speed of sound, attenuation, and backscatter coefficients of BMF, used for both ultrasonic and optical PIVs, were calculated and compared to the IEC specification of BMF. The difference between velocities obtained with ultrasound and optical data was within 4.0% using BMF with 20 µm polyamide particle at 0.2% concentration that realized acoustic properties similar to those of blood and speckle patterns similar to those in the ultrafast ultrasound blood flow imaging.
