Graph Neural Networks (GNNs) have attracted wide attention in the data science community. However, predictions of GNNs are difficult to interpret because of its complicated network architectures and nonlinear transformations. In this paper, we propose a method that extracts local interpretations of a GNN by locally applying “Predictive Graph Mining (PGM)” to the outputs of the GNN around an arbitrary given graph of interest. PGM is a sparse learning method that efficiently identifies important subgraphs for predictions, by which we can obtain locally important subgraphs in the GNN. In our experiments, we demonstrate that our proposed method can extract interpretable subgraphs for GNNs using several benchmark datasets. |
