The use of the Internet of Things (IoT) in the medical and healthcare fields has received much attention. It is called the Internet of Medical Things (IoMT). A wireless body area network (WBAN) is a very important technology to realize IoMT systems. IEEE 802.15.6 is known as one of WBAN's international standards for medical and healthcare applications. This study provides an evaluation of IEEE 802.15.6 ultra-wideband (UWB) physical layer (PHY) based wireless body area network (WBAN) using super orthogonal convolutional codes (SOCC). Numerical results show that sufficient dependability cannot be obtained with the error correcting code specified in the IEEE 802.15.6 when applying the single pulse option, while both high energy efficiency and dependability can be obtained by applying SOCC. In addition, it is confirmed that higher dependability can be obtained by combining SOCC with a Reed-Solomon code with a coding rate that is almost the same as the error correction code specified in the standard. |
