Non-contact Heartbeat Detection based on Diversity Effect Using Multibeam Doppler Sensor

(in English) Heartbeat is one of the most important biological signals for understanding the state of health. Therefore, heartbeat detection is expected to be applied in the medical and health care fields. In particular, due to their non-contact feature, various heartbeat detection methods using a Doppler sensor have been proposed. Most of conventional methods have used a single beam Doppler sensor. However, the methods using a single-beam Doppler sensor have problems that when the SNR (Signal-to-Noise Ratio) of heartbeat components is low for the beam direction, the heartbeat detection accuracy is likely to degrade. In this report, for more accurate heartbeat detection, we propose a heartbeat detection method based on the diversity effect using a multibeam Doppler sensor. The SNR of the heartbeat component in the received signal is different for each beam, because the chest wall fluctuation caused by heartbeat differs from one reflection site to another. In other words, even if the SNR of the heartbeat component is low for one beam, the SNR could be high for the other beams. Based on this fact, the proposed method detects heartbeat with more robustness against the degradation of the SNR of the heartbeat component by using the received signals of multiple beams. Through the experiments, we confirmed that the proposed method using multibeam detected heartbeat more accurately than the method using single-beam.
