[Short Paper] Measurement of propagation attenuation of standing user for directional WBAN

(in English) Wireless body area network (WBAN) is a communication system between wearable devices for medical, sports, and entertainment applications. In a user-dense environment, inter-WBAN interference occurs which reduces throughput. A WBAN that devices have directional antennas is effective to reduce the interference to other users. In this paper, we propose a directional WBAN with directional antennas, and evaluate the propagation attenuation. We measured the propagation attenuation in a standing position using 16.3 GHz continuous wave (CW). Patch antennas that are fabricated for the directional WBAN are used as the transmitter and receiver antennas. We also measured the propagation attenuation of line-of-sight communication with the same patch antennas for comparison. The deviation of the average measured received power between the head and toe communication and the line-of-sight communication was ±1.1 dB. From the results, the head and toe communication can be considered line-of-sight condition in the standing position.
