In recent years, non-invasive stimulation of deep brain tissue has attracted much attention in the treatment of brain dysfunctions, such as cerebellar regions related to motor and sensory functions. Recently, temporal interference (TI) stimulation has been proposed to enable stimulation of deeper brain regions selectively for first time. TI generates a modulated envelope by superposing two slightly different kilohertz alternating currents that are injected through attached electrodes to the scalp. It is considered that neurostimulation occurs in that maximum interference region that can be adjusted by the stimulation parameters. Previous studies reported promising results in animal experiments, although application of TI to the human body has not been sufficiently discussed. In the previous study, we investigated the stimulation parameters that permitted steering the stimulation site on the human cerebellum surface without changing electrode positions. In this paper, we used a realistic human head model to analyze the envelope modulation of electric fields in the cerebellum under various electrode conditions to investigate focal stimulation in different sub-region of the cerebellum that contributes to different functions. As a result, in the case of focal deep cerebellar stimulation, it was effective to increase the anode-cathode distance for the electrode position. However, to select and stimulate only one functional area, it is still necessary to evaluate better strategies of the electrode montage. |
