Design and analysis of a three-dimensional TM-pass/TE-stop waveguide polarizer in the THz region

(in English) We propose a THz TM-pass/TE-stop waveguide polarizer, the core of which is sandwiched by semiconductor layers. First, we carry out the eigenmode analysis of the polarizer section using the imaginary-distance beam-propagation method. InAs is used for the semiconductor layer. We calculate the propagation loss of the eigenmodes for estimating an appropriate buffer thickness. Next, we analyze the polarizer using the finite-difference time-domain method. It is shown that an extinction ratio of more than 30 dB can be obtained at a designed frequency. Finally, we evaluate the frequency characteristics for a temperature change from 280 to 320 K, in comparison with the polarizer using InSb as the semiconductor layer. It is revealed that the peak frequency of an extinction ratio becomes higher as the temperature is increased for the sensor with the InSb layer. In contrast, the polarizer using the InAs layer is found to offer an extinction ratio of more than 15 dB over a frequency range of 1.25~1.38 THz from 280 to 320 K.
