Recently, the demands for millimeter-wave wireless technologies are increasing owing to the development of the 5th generation (5G) mobile communication systems and high-resolution millimeter-wave radar systems for security applications. In the millimeter-wave and THz frequency ranges, a signal/waveform control based on the standard digital signal processing technologies becomes rather hard to be applied compared to the microwave frequency ranges. Besides, the radio-over-fiber (RoF) technique is rather useful for the millimeter-wave frequency ranges to overcome the signal degradation caused by the large propagation loss of the millimeter-wave signals in metal cables and air. In this report, a new approach for microwave/millimeter-wave signal processing by use of optical phase modulation, RoF techniques, and optical fiber dispersion effects is presented. |
