Characterization of Small Peripheral Nerve Responses to Intraepidermal Electrical Stimulation

(in English) In recent years, there has been a lot of interest in selective stimulation of small peripheral nerve fibers (Aδ-fiber and C-fiber) in the field of neuroscience, such as the diagnoses of peripheral neuropathy. Intraepidermal electrical stimulation (IES) is one method for selective stimulation of small fibers. IES realizes selective stimulation by applying a weak and focalized current through a needle electrode pierced into the skin. However, one challenge is determining the optimal stimulation parameters for selective stimulation as electrical response of the small fibers are yet to be fully understand. In this paper, we measured the synaptic properties of pain threshold using a different number of continuous pulses for Aδ-fiber and C-fiber. In addition, we modelled the responses of small peripheral nerve fibers using a computational model that combines electromagnetic field analysis, neural model, and synaptic model to investigate. As a result, the computational results showed a good agreement with the experimental measurements.
