Development of 24- and 60-GHz Dual-Band Double-Directional Channel Sounder

(in English) In recent years, the use of millimeter-wave bands has been expanding in new wireless communication systems such as the 5th generation mobile communication system (5G). Since millimeter-wave has quasi-optical propagation characteristics, it is necessary to develop a channel model that takes into account the site-specific characteristics of individual environments. For this reason, a large amount of channel measurement data measured in a wide range of frequency bands covering millimeter-wave in various environments is required. In particular, it is necessary to obtain the angular channel characteristics at both transmitter and receiver, which requires a large amount of cost and time. In our previous study, we introduced a commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) phased-array beamforming radio circuit for the 24-GHz band into the 60-GHz millimeter-wave double-directional channel sounder developed in the previous study. This paper extended to realize 60/24-GHz dual-band simultaneous measurement. In this paper, we detailed the design of the channel sounder and its calibration method. As a demonstration of operation, some channel sounding results taken in urban macro cellular environment were quickly reported.
