On Space debris environment due to Anti-Satellite Test of Cosmos 1408 satellite Makoto Tanaka (Tokai Univ.) SANE2021-105 |

There are about 25420 pieces of space debris (more than 10 cm in diameter) in the Earth's orbit (February 2022), and they fly near the Earth at hypervelocity. In this study, we analyzed the Russian Anti-Satellite Weapon (ASTA) event's orbit, which occurred around 2:45 UTC on November 15, 2021. The analysis showed that the debris dispersed over a wide area from 150 km to 1400 km altitude, and many of them had small BSTAR values. We found that the debris will continue to orbit for a long time. We also attempted to determine when Cosmos 1408 was destroyed by ASAT and its orbit. As a result, we found that the ASAT event occurred on November 15, 2022, at 02:45:01 UTC. |
