Mechanism hypothesis for governing imagination by coordination of type I/II pyramidal cells in the claustrum

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) The ability to imagination may be realized by a mechanism that dynamically integrates accumulated knowledge about the world, independent of the real world. Recently, a model has been proposed in which the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC), under the control of the claustrum (CLA), controls the integration of neural activity through projections to various areas of the neocortex. In order for the imagination to function properly in the neocortex, the regions to be detached and the regions to be integrated should be closely coordinated. The excitatory pyramidal cells that project from the CLA to various regions of the neocortex include two types of cell populations: Type I and Type II. In the present study, we followed the procedure of the Structure-constrained Interface Decomposition (SCID) Method to construct the internal mechanism of CLA, which supports imaginative functions in the neocortex. As a result, we proposed an imagination mechanism within the CLA, in which transiently active Type I cell populations are responsible for initiating synchronization between regions for information integration (Clock function), and persistently active Type II cell populations are responsible for detachment (Block function).
