[Special Invited Talk] Burst-Mode Transmission Technologies for Optical Access Networks
Shunji Kimura (Kyushu Univ.) CAS2021-93 CS2021-95
Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) A typical transceivers used in optical communication are designed on the premise that light is continuously transmitted and received at a constant average power. This is a very effective condition for stable operation of the transceiver circuits in a steady state. However, when research and development of optical packet routing became active in this century to improve the granularity of traffic, attention was drawn to burst-mode transmission technology that transmits and receives optical signals intermittently. Various transmission and reception methods that respond instantaneously to changes in the average optical power and phase of the signals were proposed but burst-mode transmission technology was first adopted in real systems in optical access networks, where dynamic range requirements are the most stringent and cost pressures are the highest. The burst-mode transmission technology used for upstream transmission in the PON (Passive Optical Network) system, which is now widespread throughout the world, began with a study to make it an economical technology that could withstand mass production, and was followed by the development of dual-rate burst reception technology for mixed operation of ONUs of different bit rates and the technological evolution leading to the realization of the NG-PON2 system, which enables gradual expansion of bandwidth by combining wavelength tunable technology. the paper will discuss the future direction of research and development through technological trends such as China's original Combo-PON, the 5G Mobile Front Haul application of PON, which started from the recent discussion on the convergence of fixed mobile networks, and high-speed PON such as 50G-EPON and HS(50G)-PON, as well as linear burst transmission using multi-level transmission technology, will be discussed.
