Effects of Asymmetric LoS-MIMO Transmission Using Millimeter Waves

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) In recent years, microwave and millimeter-wave bands have been considered for outdoor applications to cope with an increase in communication traffic.
However, as the frequency of the conventional system increases, the propagation loss increases in Non-Line-of-Sight (NLoS) environments with many obstacles such as urban areas. As a solution to this problem, research on communication systems using UAVs (drones) as relay stations has been conducted. By using drones as relay stations, it is possible to avoid obstacles such as buildings and to communicate in a line-of-sight (LoS) environment, thus reducing propagation loss. In the system, there is a difference in the number of antenna elements between transmission and reception. In considering the entire communication system, it is important to know the characteristics of asymmetric LoS-MIMO with a different number of transmitting and receiving elements. In this study, we compare asymmetric LoS-MIMO with symmetric LoS-MIMO, which has the same number of transmitting and receiving elements, to clarify its characteristics.
